We, at Bone & Joint Clinic provide all kinds of poliotic treatment including the medical treatment & surgeries, as the surgery is the major and the most effective treatment for Poliomyelitis.

What is Polio and How it affects the Body?

Poliomyelitis aka Polio is a viral infection affecting young children mostly, it enters in the body then multiplies in the intestine thus entering into brain and spinal cord thus leading to the paralysis of the body.

Common Symptoms of Polio are:

  • Fever

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Vomiting

  • Neck Stiffness

  • Pain in limbs

All other symptoms and fever go away, leaving the paralysis behind, that is why it is known as the Post-Polio Residual Paralysis.

How & Why the Surgery will be performed?

The Surgical treatment helps in the correction of the deformities, these are mostly performed when the patient is in the post polio paralysis state and the medical treatment has failed or the unattended cases of polio. Various Surgeries that are performed in the polio cases, according to the deformities and the paralysis are:

  • Foot Correction Surgery – deformities like foot drop, cavus foot etc are treated.

  • Limb Lengthening Surgery – limb lengthening is done majorly by Ilizarov’s technique.

  • Tendon Transfer Surgery – one strong tendon is transferred on the site of a weak tendon, and then rehabilitated to perform the action of the weak tendon.

  • Contracture Release Surgery – foot or knee contractures are released to ensure full range of motion of a joint.

  • Tendon Release or lengthening surgery – These are mainly performed for the foot tendon release, for example, Achilles tendon release or Z-plasty.

  • Joint Fusion Surgeries (Arthrodesis) – these are performed to attain stability, so that, a particular joint can be put to a good use.

  • Osteotomy Surgery – the bone is cut in a specific shape to ensure proper alignment of bones.
