In simple words, Stem Cell therapy is like growing your own cells in the body in order to heal itself!
The Stem cells can grow themselves up by constantly dividing into new daughter cells, constantly increasing in number and thus repairing the damage. The stem cells from bone-marrow are very important for orthopedic disorders as they contain good amount of CD34+ stem cells which are great at healing bones and cartilages.
How’s the Procedure is performed?
Stem cells are taken from the bone marrow of a healthy bone, for example, for the treatment of the knee, stem cells are taken from the bone marrow of the pelvic bone (hip bone).
A needle is inserted into the iliac part of the hip bone and bone-marrow is obtained or harvested through it.
The stem cells are separated from the bone marrow and are grown in the lab.
Then these stem cells are injected into the damaged area, where it starts dividing into daughter cells which then divide further, thus helping in the repair of the bone and tissues leading to healing thus treating the condition.
