What is Polio and How it affects the Body?
Poliomyelitis aka Polio is a viral infection affecting young children mostly, it enters in the body then multiplies in the intestine thus entering into brain and spinal cord thus leading to the paralysis of the body.
Common Symptoms of Polio are:
Pain in limbs
All other symptoms and fever go away, leaving the paralysis behind, that is why it is known as the Post-Polio Residual Paralysis.
How & Why the Surgery will be performed?
The Surgical treatment helps in the correction of the deformities, these are mostly performed when the patient is in the post polio paralysis state and the medical treatment has failed or the unattended cases of polio. Various Surgeries that are performed in the polio cases, according to the deformities and the paralysis are:
Foot Correction Surgery – deformities like foot drop, cavus foot etc are treated.
Limb Lengthening Surgery – limb lengthening is done majorly by Ilizarov’s technique.
Tendon Transfer Surgery – one strong tendon is transferred on the site of a weak tendon, and then rehabilitated to perform the action of the weak tendon.
Contracture Release Surgery – foot or knee contractures are released to ensure full range of motion of a joint.
Tendon Release or lengthening surgery – These are mainly performed for the foot tendon release, for example, Achilles tendon release or Z-plasty.
Joint Fusion Surgeries (Arthrodesis) – these are performed to attain stability, so that, a particular joint can be put to a good use.
Osteotomy Surgery – the bone is cut in a specific shape to ensure proper alignment of bones.
Question 1.What’s the main purpose of these surgeries?
Answer. The main purpose behind the poliotic surgeries is to improve function and the mobility. The goal is to make the patient walk normally and perform his/her daily activities with ease.
Question 2. What symptoms can be corrected with the help of these surgeries?
Answer. The following disabilities can be corrected:

Question 3. Will I still need to have braces?
Answer. In the lower limb surgeries, most likely chances are that braces will still be needed but much lighter ones and with lesser difficulty level.
Question 4. How much time will the whole surgery take?
Answer. It depends upon which surgery is being performed. Normally these surgeries will take around 2 to 4 hours.
Question 5. When will I be able to stand up after the surgery?
Answer. You will be able to stand with support, a few days after the surgery.
Question 6. Will I be able to walk and climb stairs?
Answer. It depends upon the level of residual paralysis and we will try our level best that You will be able to walk and climb stairs without difficulty after the completion of the rehabilitation process.
Question 7. Till what time will I be hospitalized?
Answer. Though it can vary from patient to patient, but generally the stay is around 3 to 5 days.
Question 8. Will I need General Anesthesia?
Answer. Both regional and general can be given to the patient, It is optional,depending upon the age and other medical conditions.

Answer. The new technology, early rehabilitation, new analgesics and other recent measures will make you feel the least pain possible.
