Procedure of Spinal Surgery

Different Surgeries have different procedure and approaches. The common Spinal Surgeries are

1. Laser Laminectomy (Spinal Decompression)

  • In this surgery, the incision in made on the back, where the pressure is to be relieved.
  • The muscles are made to retract towards the sides for a better and clear view
  • The outer structure named as the lamina is removed in order to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord.
  • Bone grafts and screws then are placed instead of the removed bone.
  • Flaps and the incision is closed after that followed by a bandage.

2. MicroDiscectomy (Spinal Decompression)

  • In this surgery, the incision in made on the back, where the pressure is to be relieved.
  • The muscles are made to retract towards the sides for a better and clear view
  • Some portion of the outer structure(facet or lamina) is removed in order to get better access to the disc, the portion of the disc that is herniating is shaved off which will ultimately relieve the pressure on the spine and the nerves.
  • Bone grafts and screws then are placed instead of the removed bone.
  • Flaps and the incision is closed after that followed by a bandage.

3. Spinal Fixation Surgery

  • The idea is to fix painful spinal bones (vertebrae) so that they can heal as one bone thus relieving the pain.
  • The incision is made,on the preferential and suitable site, and the bone graft is applied in between the two vertebrae.
  • They are made immobile by the fixation of the screws and plates according to the requirement.
  • Flaps and incision is then closed and brace will be provided to ensure healing.

4. Kyphoplasty & Vertebroplasty

  • Kyphoplasty is a minimal invasive procedure, in which a tiny incision is made on the back where the compression fracture is present.
  • A needle (Balloon tamp) is inserted into the fractured bone, thus inflating a balloon inside, which will help in relieving the pain while giving the height to the compressed vertebra.
  • After the inflation of the balloon, the bone cement is injected inside it to maintain this height and thus relieve pain, this specific procedure is called as vertebroplasty, which is performed along with kyphoplasty.
  • Its a day care procedure, if only one vertebra is to be injected, stay can increase depending upon the number of vertebrae being treated.
  • Patient can walk the same day after a few hours, generally takes less than an hour.

The alternate treatments can delay the Surgery and it depends upon the condition of spine and if the patient is eligible for any alternate treatment.

Yes, You will receive continuous physiotherapy treatment from our well qualified physiotherapist throughout the whole process.
