What Is TB Spine and How Is It Treated

TB spine, or Pott’s disease, doesn’t start in the spine. It starts in the lungs, usually. The bacteria get into the blood, travel down, and settle in the vertebrae and the discs between them, where they slowly break bone down. Most people first notice backache. They blame the mattress. Or the desk chair. Left untreated, this infection turns dangerous, because collapsing bone and pinched nerves don’t heal on their own. Caught early, though, it responds well.

According to Dr. Sumit Badhwar, one of the Best Orthopedic Surgeon in Noida, “Most patients show up after weeks of spinal pain that’s worse at night. Some have a low fever, some have lost weight. Put those together and I want an MRI, no debate. Waiting costs nerve function.”

What Causes TB Spine and What Are Its Symptoms?

TB rarely begins in the spine. It gets there from somewhere else.

  • Bacterial Spread: Infection in the lungs or lymph nodes sends bacteria into the blood, and the spine catches some of them. That’s the usual route.
  • Weak Immunity: Poor nutrition, HIV, or a long illness lowers your defences. Overcrowded living adds to it.
  • Early Symptoms: A dull ache, stiffness, low fever, night sweats, weight loss. Weeks, not days. And lying flat often makes it worse.
  • Late Warning Signs: Weak legs, numbness, difficulty walking, a visible hump on the spine. By then, nerves are already under pressure.

Diagnosis comes first, usually an MRI and TB tests. Our bone infection treatment page covers what happens next.

How Is TB Spine Treated?

Mostly it’s medicine. Surgery is rare.

  • Anti-Tubercular Therapy: TB drugs, taken for 9 to 12 months, sometimes longer. The classic mistake? Stopping once the pain eases.
  • Bracing and Rest: A brace holds the spine steady while the infection calms down. Activity comes back in stages, not all at once.
  • Surgery: Only when nerves are squeezed, an abscess forms, the spine turns unstable, or the deformity keeps worsening. Most patients skip it.
  • Walking and Recovery: Patients treated early usually keep walking, and recover well. With existing weakness, improvement is still possible, but it depends on how long the nerves were pressed.

Why Choose Dr. Sumit Badhwar for TB Spine Treatment?

Dr. Sumit Badhwar holds an MBBS, a Diploma in Orthopaedics, and an M.Ch in Orthopaedics, and has practised in Noida for over 15 years. For TB spine treatment, he starts with the MRI and nerve status, then plans medicines, bracing, or surgery, the last only if the spinal cord is at risk. The clinic has digital X-ray, blood sample collection, and physiotherapy under one roof, so monitoring and rehab don’t mean running between centres.

Serious enough to cause paralysis if ignored. Caught early, it rarely does.

Yes, when it’s caught early and the full medicine course is finished.

Spine TB itself doesn’t spread. Active lung TB can, hence chest screening.

Most need 9 to 12 months. Scans and recovery decide the exact length.
